Healing Herbs
All of our body products and our soaps contain a set of herbs that have been used externally for centuries to help heal the body. The herbs that are used in all the Herbal Allies body products and soaps are:

  • Calendula flowers (Calendula officinalis): Also known as Pot Marigold. Marigold is one of the best herbs for treating local skin problems. It is anti-fungal, antibacterial and a styptic. It can therefore be used wherever there is an inflammation on the skin, external bleeding or wound, bruising or strains. It is ideal for the treatment of minor burns and scalds. Calendula is mild in its action and has been liberally used as a salve for babies.
  • Comfrey root and leaf (Symphytum officinale): Comfrey leaf and root contain allantoin which helps stimulate cell proliferation. This herb has been used effectively by monks for centuries for speeding wound healing and guarding against scar tissue developing incorrectly. Comfrey is so strong that its external application to deep wounds can lead to tissue forming over the wound before it is healed deeper down. Comfrey also has reputed anti-cancer action.
  • Echinacea root (Echinacea angustifolia): This herb is widely known for its ability to stimulate the body's immune system. This ability also applies to the skin's immune functions. Echinacea is anti-microbial and a natural antibiotic. It contains a volatile oil and phenol that are antiseptic.
  • Lemon Balm leaf (Melissa officinalis): This is an Old World mint cultivated for its lemon-flavored, fragrant leaves. It is used in cosmetics because of its ability to soothe the skin. Internally, it is a mile antidepressant.
  • Plantain leaf (Plantago major): Plantain is primarily used for its demulcent, healing qualities. It is a rich source of chlorophyll and allantoin and speeds the healing of skin. It has been used as a stimulating, cleansing wash for sore, inflamed skin.

Variety Specific Herbs and Oils
In addition to the five common herbs, each variety also has its own special herb and essential oil that are added. These herbs and oils provide a unique character to each variety that effect the mind and spirit as well as the body. These unique herbs and essential oils are listed below:

Citrus: Lemon and Orange Peel and a blend of Citrus Essential Oils - The citrus quality of orange and lemon peel provide a refreshing, astringent quality to the products - good for normal to oily skin. Our customers tell us that the Citrus Lip Balm feels cool on their lips when they apply it. The essential oils assist in toning the skin and tissue, relieving congested skin, easing depression, nervous exhaustion, performance stress and headaches. These herbs and oils have also been used for insect bites, spots, acne, and warts.

Cranberry Mint: Cranberries, Peppermint Leaves and Mint Essential Oils - Evidence of the cultivation of these herbs and oils has been found in Egyptian tombs dating from 1,000 B.C. They help ease anxiety, tension, headache, fatigue, etc. They have been used to relieve itching and inflammations of the skin as well as acne and dermatitis. Cranberries have long been used as a remedy for skin spots.

Earth Amber: Amber and Almond nuts and essential oils - The aroma of these oils provides a wonderful earthy scent to the products in this variety. As a matter of fact, one of our first customers named this variety. She loved the wonderful, earthy scent - and so it was named Earth Amber. This variety is truly a sensual delight.

Lavender: Lavender Flowers and Lavender Essential Oil - Lavender has been used for centuries to stimulate sore, exhausted muscles and to rub on sprains, strains and stiff joints. It relieves melancholy and raises the spirits. It is used to relieve fatigue and exhaustion and is yet soothing. It stimulates the complexion and cleanses the skin. It is used as an insect repellant. After a long day, Lavender just makes one feel better.

Marigold: Calendula Flowers and a blend of Floral Essential Oils - We call this variety healing because it has an extra portion of calendula flowers, the wonderfully healing herb described above. The oils have been used to tone tissue, for mature and sensitive skin, and for wrinkles. It has also been used for acne, excessive perspiration, to heal scars, stretch marks, and thread veins, and as an insect repellant.

Natural: Chamomile Flowers - We formulated natural on request from those who are allergic to or who don't like strong fragrances. This variety has no essential oils. The aroma is only that of the nourishing oils and lovely chamomile that are used to nurture the skin. Chamomile is noted for its ability to reduce anxiety and insomnia. It also will speed wound healing, reduce swelling, and cleanse the pores of impurities. It also helps to strengthen the tissues.

Rose: Rose Petals and Buds and a blend of Essential Oils and Absolutes - Roses have long been a favored flower. In addition to bringing out the best in people, roses are associated with love and loving life. Roses, the herb and the oils, are soothing both physically and emotionally, the petals are astringent and cleansing. Oils
We use a set of nourishing oils in our body products. They are used in differing proportions in the various lotions and balms. The oils we use are:

Avocado: This oil is obtained from the pulp of the avocado pear and is one of the most active and effective ingredients used by the cosmetic industry. It has an extraordinarily high amount of emollience and is highly therapeutic. Avocado oil contains protein, amino acids and relatively large amounts of vitamins A, B1 and B2, D, and E making this oil very much alive. These components enable avocado oil to regenerate cells, soften body tissue, and heal scaly skin and scalp. It is especially good to nourish and restore dry, dehydrated, and mature skin.

Grapeseed: An ultra-fine oil expressed from the seeds of grapes and used as a carrier oil. This oil is very light and odorless. It absorbs easily through the skin. This oil is high in Vitamin E and is 76% essential fatty acid, linoleic acid (also known as Omega 6). It contains natural chlorophyll and valuable antioxidants (proanthocyninidins). It is very rich in vitamins, minerals and linoleic acid. The skin absorbs it easily. Since it is slightly astringent, it tightens and tones the skin.

Hazelnut: Hazelnut is a wonderful moisturizer similar to almond oil. It is the only fixed nut oil with an astringent quality, making it beneficial for use on oily skin. It absorbs quickly and is useful as a base for oily or acne-prone skins. This oil is unusual in that only two fatty acids account for 90 percent of its fatty-acid content (80 percent oleic acid and 10 percent linoleic acid). Hazelnut is very good for damaged skin.

Jojoba: This oil is extracted from seeds of the jojoba plant (expeller pressed). It is odorless and is one of the best all around natural oils. Jojoba is very similar in composition to human natural skin oils and therefore penetrates the skin rapidly to nourish, soften and moisturize. It nourishes the skin as no other oil and remains effective regardless of skin type. Jojoba contains minerals and vitamins E and A which make skin silky and soft. It is excellent for inflamed skins, psoriasis, eczema, acne, and for hair care. It is reputed to be a natural wrinkle remover. It is also an excellent antioxident oil.

Olive: An excellent all-purpose oil for massage and lotions. Olive oil is slightly green which lends the green tint to our lotions and balms. It is very emollient and has a penetrating power that is superior to mineral oils. We use a cold-processed olive oil for all our body lotions and balms

We use a pomace olive oil for our soaps. Pomace is the ground flesh and pits of the olives that are left after pressing. Any oil that hasn't been removed by pressure can then be extracted using steam and solvents. It makes a very hard and mild-on-the-skin soap.

Shea Butter: Shea butter is also called African Karite butter. This refined butter is cold expeller pressed from the pits of the fruit of the African Karite tree. Shea is extremely moisturizing and gentle to the skin.

This makes them great at what they do - cleanse and moisturize your skin. Using this soap will leave your skin feeling nourished and moist - not dry.

Bath Salts: Our Bath salts are made with a combination of Dead Sea Salts, Sea Salts, Epsom Salts, Borax, Herbs and Essential/Fragrance Oils. Many of our customers who take showers are now using Bath Salts as a treat by putting the stopper in the tub, pouring the salts into the water that collects as they shower. This gives their feet the benefits of an herb and mineral bath and their whole body the benefit of the healing aroma of the essential oils.

Bath Oil: Our Bath oil is made with what is called Turkey Red Oil. It is the only oil I have found that truly dispurses in the water rather than sits on top of the water. It does not leave oily films either on your skin or on the bath tub. We add herbs and essential oils to this oil.
